How to Apply Vinyl

Never worked with vinyl before? Need some detailed instructions? No worries! Grab some cleaning supplies, scissors, tape, a ruler {or measuring tape}, and an old credit card and let's get started!

 

1. Know What You're Working With
First off - get to know your vinyl! If you ordered just a standard print from us, you recieved our matte vinyl. On top of your vinyl is what is called 'transfer tape' which helps you transfer the vinyl to your flat surface, just behind that is the vinyl itself, and on the back is - well - the backing! This keeps your vinyl from sticking to everything else before you're ready.

2. Clean Your Area
Always the least favorite part - cleaning! Clean your surface with a mild cleanser and allow to dry thoroughly. Make sure you cover the whole area that your image will be on. Matte vinyl can sometimes be finicky and you want to make sure that your surface is as clean as possible to ensure that your image stays in place as long as you want it to!

3. Prep the Vinyl
Lay the vinyl on a hard, flat surface. Using an old credit card {or something similar}, rub over the surface of the vinyl. The point here is to get the vinyl to adhere to the transfer tape just enough so that it will release the backing - don't rub too hard or you'll have a hard time getting the transfer tape to release later.

4-1. Place it on the Wall
Without removing anything, place your image on the wall and tape it where you want it to be. It's best to use the arrows as guides - while we try and get the edges of the transfer tape and backing as straight as we can, we can't offer any guarantees that it is! Use the arrows - that's what they're for!

If you have a small image, you probably can just tape along one side of the widest part of the image. With a larger image, it's easiest to do this in two parts, so pick a half to start with and tape off the other half. {see picture}

5. Remove the Backing
The type of vinyl that you're using has an affinity for being straight, so the easiest way to do this is to flip the image over and peel the backing off at 180° - that way the vinyl have an easier time sticking to the transfer tape since it's staying flat.

If your applying a large image, just peel of the backing until you reach your half way point and cut off the excess. If you're doing this in one piece, just take all the backing off - no cutting needed.

6. Flip the image back onto the wall and double check to make sure it's in the right place - you can tack down the corners of the transfer tape if you need*. Grab your credit card and rub the image onto the wall.

*If you're doing this on a non-porous surface (eg. glass, metal) be careful! Once the vinyl touches the surface, it probably won't come off without ruining the vinyl.

7. If you're doing this one half at a time, take off the tape and repeat steps 5 and 6 for the other half of your image.

8. Remove the Transfer Tape
Once again, you're vinyl wants to be as straight as possible. Slowly peel the transfer tape off at 180°, watching closely to make sure that the vinyl is being released from the transfer tape.
